The Chicago Bulls will look to curb their recent nosedive on Wednesday night at the United Center, where they’ll host a banged-up Cleveland Cavaliers team that, so far, has been struggling to replicate its 64-18 run in 2024-25.
Cleveland will be missing reigning Defensive Player of the Year power forward/center Evan Mobley, plus key wings Max Strus (a cast-aside former Bull) and Sam Merrill. But they’ll still have the best three players on the floor in All-Stars Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen. And the Bulls are so bad, teams don’t respect them on either end of the floor.
Among Bulls rotation pieces, only Ayo Dosunmu is on Chicago’s injury report.
During their first encounter of the season on Nov. 8, the Cavaliers needed a 12-0 rally to close out the fourth quarter with a narrow 128-122 comeback win.
If Chicago keeps up its current nosedive much longer, will the team undergo wholesale personnel changes at last this season? Time will tell, but the Cavaliers represent a formidable (and favored) foe.

Chicago’s two best players, point guard Josh Giddey and shooting guard Coby White, have struggled to congeal in their time together. The two-man tandem sports a lackluster -3.2 net rating when it shares the court. Both Giddey and White thrive the most with the ball in their hands, and neither is an inspiring defensive stopper. Look for Donovan to try to separate them more after the opening tip than usual, in an effort to give each player the chance to thrive on his own. Nikola Vucevic has been increasingly frustrated with his young colleagues amid all this losing. But the declining 35-year-old big is at least somewhat to blame; his glacial approach to offense is at odds with Donovan’s preferred pace-and-space approach, and he’s a relatively ground-bound sieve at the rim. Reserve big men Zach Collins and Jalen Smith clearly need to play more, especially late in games. Both offer Chicago more legitimate defensive resistance than Vucevic can possibly muster at this stage. Donovan benched Vucevic throughout the entire fourth quarter of the Bulls’ lone win among its last nine contests, a narrow 129-126 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, in favor of Collins and Smith. This marks the first in a pair of home-and-home sets of miniseries against flailing Eastern Conference hopefuls for the Bulls. Both Cleveland and Atlanta kicked off the season expecting to compete for the conference crown. Instead, both are in the play-in tournament mix with middling 15-12 records. The Bulls should represent an easy opportunity for the better, deeper Cavaliers and Hawks to bolster their records. If Chicago goes winless across all four of its games against Cleveland and Atlanta, Billy Donovan‘s job could be in serious jeopardy. The Bulls would then have just one win in 13 games. President Arturas Karnisovas may be the Reinsdorf employee most culpable for this current mess, but Donovan will likely fall on the sword first.Injury Report
