TSA offers traveling tips for those flying during the upcoming holidays

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Flying home for the holidays? The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has some tips for travelers.

Having a valid ID

Since May, it has been required for U.S. air travelers to have a REAL ID, but passengers without it or any compliant ID have so far been allowed to get through security with additional screening and a warning.

Starting in February, that will change, as travelers without one will be charged a $45 fee. Officials say 98% of passengers at checkpoints at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport already have a REAL ID compliant ID.

“The important takeaway for the travelers is this. If you plan to travel by air and you don’t have an acceptable form of ID, the best and simplest option, even now, is to visit the New York State DMV and get a real ID as soon as possible,” said Brian Bushnell, TSA’s acting federal security director for Upstate New York.

If you have a REAL ID compliant ID, it will have a star or a flag on it. Travelers can also use a passport or passport card to travel.

    What you can bring

Travelers are asked not to bring wrapped gifts, but bring gift bags instead. The TSA also advises people to start packing with an empty bag, so you are less likely to pack any prohibited items.

“The general rule of thumb is that if you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it then it’s not a solid, and if it’s more than 3.4 ounces, it should be packed in a checked bag,” said Bushnell.

People can bring foods such as cookies, but TSA might have to take a look at them. For the full list of what you can and can’t bring, visit the TSA’s website here.

    Arriving early

The TSA encourages people to get to the airport two hours before the scheduled departure time. Officials say TSA staffing is determined based on projected flier volume each day. Thus, travelers are asked to have patience with TSA staff.

“If the TSA agent tells you to do something, it’s really easy to be like, ‘Ok!’ And that’s why you get to the airport two hours early so you don’t need to be in a super rush,” said Julia O’Gorman, a student at RIT heading back home to Dallas. “Especially this airport – it’s not really big, so you don’t have to get on a train to get everywhere. So just take your time, get there early, and if someone tells you to do something, do it.”
