It all started at Homan and Ferdinand, when a wanted Honda sedan began traveling at a high rate of speed.
NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter, which captured the scene, said the vehicle was originally followed by a Chicago Police Department helicopter as it traveled south on Sacramento and entered Interstate 290 traveling eastbound. Eventually, the vehicle exited onto DuSable Lake Shore Drive, then got off at 47th, traveling westbound.
“We have a high-speed, extremely dangerous pursuit here,” Sky 5 reporter Mike Lorber said while covering the chase.
It was there that the vehicle then hit another car near 47th and Lake Park. After the crash, the vehicle made a U-turn and returned to DuSable Lake Shore Drive, traveling the wrong direction in the northbound lanes before it again made a U-turn and took northbound Lake Shore Drive to westbound 31st Street.
With the dangerous driving escalating, Chicago police began pursuing the vehicle on the ground.
The Honda then drove to the Dan Ryan, traveling south to Pershing, where it again traveled the wrong direction on the roadway, entering the sidewalk at one point to evade police.
“This is a very, very dangerous situation,” Lorber said.
It then again took the southbound Dan Ryan to westbound 71st street, where it crashed through a dead end gate near an industrial area off Pulaski. The vehicle came to a stop after it crashed behind a building near 70th and Kedvale and three people exited the vehicle and began fleeing on foot.
The trio ran toward 69th and Kedvale before splitting up.
The chase lasted nearly an hour before a manhunt for the suspects began.
Several police officers and squad cars were seen flooding the scene near where the occupants of the vehicle fled on foot. A police K9 was also brought in amid the manhunt.
Dozens of squad cars could be seen responding to the area as officers searched for suspects throughout at a residential area.
It was not immediately clear why police were chasing the vehicle, but footage appeared to show at least one person being taken into custody. A second masked individual was also seen being placed in handcuffs several minutes later.
It was not known if either person was connected to the vehicle involved in the chase, however.
