These things come in clusters, and there was a boom-boom today with Brad Keller signing with the Phillies and now Luke Weaver signing with the Mets.
And, sure enough, Weaver gets the exact same deal as Keller:
When finalized, the Weaver deal will be for 2 years and $22M with the Mets. It is pending physical t.co/CUPzBFelxY
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) December 17, 2025It was literally this morning in the Bullets that I was talking about whether the remaining back-end relievers would be signing soon, and I mentioned the top three that came to mind quickly … two of which were Keller and Weaver. I guess the answer was VERY SOON.
So, uh, Pete Fairbanks. U up?
There are other relievers yet out there, of course, and this doesn’t touch the trade market. It’s not actually Fairbanks or bust for the Cubs, but he is pretty clearly the best on-paper option out there if the Cubs want to bring in a 9th inning type arm to pair with Daniel Palencia. The Cubs, of course, are far from the only club that would like to add another late-inning arm, though.
Meanwhile, the Mets and Phillies make the National League all the more challenging with potentially superlative bullpens, and hopefully they won’t spend TOO much more cash this offseason (because I can see them competing with the Cubs on starting pitching).
