Actress Sally Struthers, 78, revealed fans were confused about her dynamic with her All in the Family co-star, late director, Rob Reiner.
In a February 2024 interview with Page Six, Struthers said viewers of the hit 1970s series were under the impression that she and Reiner were actually married in real life. As fans of All in the Family are aware, Struthers and Reiner starred as married couple, Gloria Stivic and Michael "Meathead" Stivic, throughout the show's first eight seasons. Struthers told the publication that confused fans would approach her when she was out with her then-husband, William C. Rader, whom she divorced in 1984.
"When they saw me with my real life husband, they go, 'No where's your husband?' I'd say 'This is my husband,'" said Struthers during the Page Six interview.
She then said the fans would clarify they were looking for Reiner. According to Struthers, she would have to tell the fans that Reiner wasn't her real-life husband, despite their on-screen romance.
"People are so funny. They just get stuck, they get an idea in their head. And they're like an old dog with a bone, they won't let go," said the Gilmore Girls star.
Sally Struthers Said Rob Reiner's First Wife, Penny Marshall, Thought They Were Having an Affair
In an April 2025 interview with Celebrity Drop, Struthers revealed that Reiner's first wife, late director and actress Penny Marshall, was up for the role of Gloria. She said she believed that Marshall would get cast because Reiner "had already been hired to play Meathead." The actress explained that while Marshall and Reiner didn't marry until 1971, the year All in the Family premiered, the former couple was living together during the audition process.
In addition, Struthers revealed that Reiner once warned her that Marshall, whom he divorced in 1981, believed they were having an affair. According to Struthers, Reiner told her that Marshall believed her overall "friendliness" indicated that she was romantically interested in the director.
In addition, Struthers said that she and Reiner didn't remain close after their 1978 All in the Family exit.
Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who wed in 1989, were pronounced dead on December 14, per Deadline. According to the publication, the couple's son, Nick, 32, has been taken into custody following the couple's sudden deaths.
Deadline reported that Struthers shared a statement to the publication about the deaths of Reiner and his wife.
“There are no words. This is beyond devastating and my heart is with their family," said Struthers in her statement.
