UNC Bears safety Cam Chapa again named to FCS Football All-American team

UNC Bears football safety Cam Chapa added to his list of honors with a second All-American selection by a Football Championship Subdivision organization.

FCS Football Central named the sophomore from Aurora to the second team in its annual list announced Monday. Last year, FCS Football Central included Chapa among the best freshman at the FCS level of Division I.

Chapa started 11 of 12 games at safety this season, and he was the Bears’ leading tackler for the second time in two years. He had 88 total tackles and his 63 solo tackles was the best in the Big Sky Conference. Chapa had a season-high 11 tackles twice during the season — in Big Sky home losses to Idaho State and Montana State. In coverage, Chapa intercepted four passes with 86 return yards.

Chapa’s career best is 12 tackles for a single game, which he reached twice as a freshman against Colorado State and Montana. He earned a Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week award and was named first-team all conference at the end of the year.

Former UNC player David Hoage was named to the first team on the defensive line. Hoage, a graduate student from Denver, played this season at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Georgia. Hoage spent six years at UNC, including two missed seasons because of a knee injury in 2022 and recovery. He returned to play in nine games for UNC last year.

Hoage is UWG’s first Division I All-American, according to the school. This month, Chapa announced on social media his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal when it opens in January. He had 171 total tackles, eight interceptions, 12 pass break ups and two forced fumbles in two seasons.

Chapa is the second player in UNC program history to record back-to-back seasons with four interceptions. His eight interceptions is tied for sixth on the school's career list.

Chapa committed to UNC in fall 2023 out of Eaglecrest High School.

He broke into the Bears' lineup early in his freshman year, and was named to the Big Sky Conference honorable mention team after the 2024 season. This year, Chapa was the only UNC player picked for the Big Sky Conference preseason team.
