The most deprived 10 per cent of councils in England will see funding increase by around 24 per cent per head on average as part of a major shake up of local government spending, ministers have announced.
The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government also confirmed plans first reported by The i Paper that six inner London councils will be allowed to charge more than the 5 per cent cap in council tax as part of the reforms.
Ministers have once again given all councils the ability to charge the maximum of 5 per cent in council tax next year, opening the door to households seeing above inflation rises to council tax from April next year.
Among the areas most likely to benefit from the overall reforms are urban areas in the Midlands and North, such as Telford, Blackpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Wolverhampton. Places in Yorkshire & the Humber are also set to see big funding increases.
