ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We are finally out of the cold snap that has been ongoing since Thanksgiving. We will rise to above normal temperatures today, with highs in the low 40s when average temperatures are in the upper 30s. Yipee!!!
Winds will be picking up however, coming out of the west with gusts up to 30 MPH. Later this afternoon a cold front comes by, but it will quickly be reversed overnight as high pressure scoots in from the south. This in addition to a developing low out to the west will drive in more warmth and moisture for Thursday.
Thursday night, the low and cold front attached will arrive, bringing stronger winds and rain. The cold front passes through Friday morning, dropping our temperatures back below freezing and bringing in gusty winds and snow. There are wind advisories in effect for Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming Counties, and we are monitoring the wind closely to see if it will intensify further.
Lake effect snow mainly off of Lake Erie comes in with the cold front the rest of Friday. Another clipper system this weekend will bring cold air and some more lake flakes around Sunday. On average, our temperatures are expected to run slightly above normal over the next 6-10 days, and we will continue to track the possibility of a white Christmas… But right now, it’s not looking likely.
