ROCHESTER, N.Y. – With a week left until Christmas Eve, the rush is on to get presents shipped to loved ones in time. Wednesday is a key deadline for those who have been putting off shipping holiday greeting cards or packages.
The U.S. Postal Service says Wednesday is the deadline for cards and ground advantage and the cutoff for first-class service. The deadline for priority mail is Thursday.
“We prepare for this year-round. Over the past five years, we’ve installed 614 package sorting machines across the country, allowing us to process 88 million packages a day,” said Mark Lawrence, strategic communications specialist for USPS. “We’re ready for it. And it takes more than just the carriers and clerks that are visible to the public. It’s our mail handlers and clerks inside of the processing facilities, which move packages from location to geographic areas and so forth to get them there for final delivery.”
Lawrence says that, to help deliveries go smoothly, homeowners should clear their driveways and sidewalks of snow and ice. That ensures that carriers don’t slip while dropping off packages.
The extra sorting machines help to keep up with the boom in e-commerce. USPS says more than 11 billion letters and packages will be sent from Thanksgiving week through the end of the year.
For other carrier options, UPS has a “Three Day Select” to “Next Day Air” option, with the choice that gets the package delivered by Christmas Eve. FedEx has standard shipping that takes five days, but the “Express” option can get a package there overnight. There’s also same-day delivery, though early shipping is required and there are location limits.
No delivery will occur on Christmas Day for any service. The longer the wait, the more expensive shipping gets.
