The One Mediterranean Port That Cruise Experts Say You Can’t Miss

Nearly every major cruise line offers Mediterranean cruises, especially in the spring and summer months. Whether you enjoy sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean or one of the many lines out there–you can most likely find a variety of itineraries and cruise lengths to book a Mediterranean cruise with your favorite line.

If you’re flexible on when you want to cruise, choosing which Mediterranean ports that you want to go to can be the deciding factor on exactly which cruise you take. With over 20 popular cruise ports in the Mediterranean itself, it’s not an easy decision to make. I used to work on cruise ships myself, and have spent well over a year of my life cruising in the Mediterranean. While it’s definitely one of my favorite parts of the world to cruise in, there is one specific port that I don’t think anyone should miss.

The Maxwells Travel, a Tiktok account of a couple who are expert cruisers, shared a video reviewing their experience visiting the port Valletta, Malta, on a Norwegian Cruise Line voyage. They were completely impressed with the city, and there were many reasons why it became one of their favorite ports. The first thing the couple mentions is the accessibility of the port. The ships dock just about a half mile away from the city center. You can either walk (although it is a little steep), take a quick one Euro elevator that brings you up, or take a quick taxi.

The second thing that stuck out to the couple was the food. They specifically mention enjoying pastizzi, which is a traditional Maltese pastry. There are many other types of food that are specifically Maltese, and with it being such a small country, it’s truly a rare chance to taste the food authentically in that very location. The Maxwells also mention that the prices were very normal, not sticking out as anything expensive or out of control.

Lastly, the couple was blown away by the sites. They mention that the city is surrounded by crystal clear blue water with incredible architecture on each street that is unlike anything they’ve seen. They end up giving Valletta, Malta a 10 out of 10 on their rating scale. And while the couple thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of their cruise, they said that so far in their trip, Malta was their favorite part.

Why Valletta, Malta Stands Out Amongst Other Mediterranean Ports

I have been to almost every single Mediterranean cruise port, and Valletta will always stand out as a port that was different from the rest. Many ports in the Mediterranean can be incredibly inconvenient. The cruise lines will advertise certain ports as the name of a big, well-known city, but the reality is that the port is actually an hour or so away from the city itself. Places like Rome (you actually port in Civitavecchia,) Athens (you port in Piraeus,) and Florence (the port is Livorno) can be quite a let-down when you realize you have to travel a bit far to get to these ports. Valletta, on the other hand, is one of the easiest cruise ports I’ve ever visited. You can walk right off the ship and get to the city center within 15 minutes. I’ve even gone back and forth from the city to the ship in one port day.

Now, the main reason why I love Valletta is because I’ve simply never seen another Mediterranean cruise port that was as beautiful and enjoyable. The buildings are brightly colored with yellow, orange, and blue accents. It’s classic and lively, and at the end of nearly every street, you can see the crystal clear sea peeking through. It also isn't nearly as populated or busy as the other popular Mediterranean ports, which makes it very enjoyable.

You can spend the day wandering the entire city, and you won’t run out of things to do. There are endless shops to get souvenirs, museums to immerse yourself in the culture, and restaurants and bars to relax in–all while walking around one of the most stunning cities in the world. It’s a place that I am constantly wanting to go back to, and it is hands down my favorite spot in the Mediterranean.
