Why Sally Struthers Says Starring in All in the Family Was Harder Than People Think

Actress Sally Strutherssaid starring as Gloria Stivic in the hit 1970s sitcom, All in the Family, wasn't all that easy.

In an April 2025 interview with Celebrity Drop, Struthers explained that her privacy was invaded after she began filming All in the Family.

"It's so hard to explain adequately without sounding negative because one's privacy is rarely thought about in the humans that walk the earth that are not performers. You know, they know to close the curtains if their glass in the bathroom is see-through when they're taking a shower, but they still in in life have their privacy," said Struthers.

She clarified that the entire All in the Family cast, which included late director Rob Reiner, who was pronounced dead on December 14, was under a microscope after the show premiered in 1971.

"But we all lost our privacy. We all became so well known that there wasn't any place we could go, anything we could do without instant recognition," said Struthers in the April 2025 interview. "And that I'm sure that sense of people who don't achieve any fame as something that was is fun and glamorous. It's hard. It's a difficult way to live because when you turn around, there's always one or 20 people staring at you."

Sally Struthers Said She Wasn't Fond of the Showrunner of 'All in the Family'

Struthers and Reiner, who played Gloria's husband, Michael "Meathead" Stivic, left All in the Family after the show's eighth season, per IMDb. The show had a nine-season run until 1979.

People magazine reported Struthers said she wasn't fond of the sitcom's showrunner, Norman Lear, who died in 2023, in a January 2025 interview on the Let's Talk About That! With Larry Saperstein and Jacob Bellotti podcast. According to Struthers, Lear would have her All in the Family castmates come to his home during the show's run.

“I wasn't, in eight years, invited to his home. It didn't feel good," said the 78-year-old actress.

She also said he made an unkind comment about why she was chosen to play Gloria. According to Struthers, Lear informed her she was hired "because just like Carroll O'Connor [who played Gloria's father, Archie Bunker], you have blue eyes and a fat face."

In addition, Struthers also said that her character wasn't given many lines on the show.

“I usually had about three lines per show that said, ‘I'll help you set the table, Ma,' ‘Michael, where are you going?’ and ‘Oh, Daddy, stop it.’ And then the next week I’d have the three same lines in a different order. And if they literally didn’t know what to do with me in a scene, they’d have me go upstairs to take a bath or wash my hair. It was very frustrating," said the Gilmore Girls star on the podcast episode.

She also said she tried unsuccessfully to leave the series following season 5.

“I went back and had three more seasons, but they were by far the most fun for me. Because finally, they had Mike and Gloria have a baby, they had us move next door into the house that [the] Jeffersons lived in,” said Struthers in the January 2025 People interview.
