Jason Ritter, star of the hit show Matlock and son of the late TV icon John Ritter, opened up for the first time in a new interview about the anger he felt for his father as a child.
The 45-year-old, who is married to actress Melanie Lynskey, sat down for the podcast I Love You So Much with host Tyler Labine to talk about a variety of complex topics, including addiction and alcoholism and the emotions behind personal struggles.
At one point during the conversation, Labine said, "We were talking about the anger, like the stuff that we're mad about as kids. Do you know where that stuff comes from?" He wondered if Jason had personally explored in therapy or elsewhere what the "catalyst of the anger that made you need to escape or avoid" might've been.
Jason considered the question before hesitantly saying, "Probably a lot of it, you know, not to like blame anybody, but I think a lot of it came from my parents' separation."
"There were aspects of it that I didn't understand and it made me very angry in general at people," he continued, calling the emotions "complicated."
Going on, Jason admitted that his father Ritter's split from his mother, Nancy Morgan, created tough feelings and opinions about both his dad and men in general, and everything became even more complicated due to the public's very adoring image of Ritter.
"I obviously had one of the greatest dads in the history of all time. I really believe that. He was such a lovely person, an absolutely dream dad, a good person," Jason first said of his father, before getting visibly choked up as he added, "And, you know, he hurt us as a family."
"He didn't actually say like, 'No thanks, to you guys. No thanks to this family,' but that's a little bit how it felt like. You made a choice where you go away from us," Jason said.

Jason explained how the dark feelings about the divorce led him to feel angry yet not know where to express that anger, noting, "I didn't want to betray him. Even saying this right now, I feel like nervous or something, because I loved him."
The Matlock star used to be afraid to "mar" fans' experience or perspective of Ritter by opening up about his anger and personal pain.
After Ritter and Morgan divorced in 1996, the Three's Company star went on to marry Amy Yasbeck in 1999, and they were together until his death in 2003.
Talking more about the emotional experience of his parents' split when he was 10, Jason explained that soon after, he started suppressing his emotions and complicated desires, leading to more problems, which he discussed in more detail in the podcast.
Over the years, Jason has been very open about his past struggles with alcoholism and anxiety and his journey to being sober. He also frequently praises Ritter as a father and actor, continuing to honor him and his enduring legacy.
