Bulls Guard Ayo Dosunmu Gives Concerning Update on Two Thumb Injuries

Fifth-year reserve Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu has been missed while sitting out the team’s last two contests with thumb injuries, and has now taken the time to provide an update on the extent of the problem. Or, more concerningly, problems.

Per K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network, Dosunmu has revealed that both his thumbs are sprained. While he asserts that his left thumb is more painful, he is also dealing with a bone bruise in his right thumb. The 6-foot-4 University of Illinois product indicated that rest is the ultimate solution for recovery.

Thanks to the time off from the NBA Cup knockout rounds (which the Bulls didn’t qualify for, as we all know), Dosunmu will have missed a whopping 10 days if he does manage to return on Wednesday for the first game in a home-and-home set with the 15-12 Cleveland Cavaliers. Dosunmu is angling to suit up at the United Center for Chicago in that contest, although the league’s latest injury report lists him as questionable.

The only guaranteed absence for the home team in that matchup is underwhelming rookie forward Noa Essengue, who, of course, is done for the year following a left shoulder surgery. Two-way players Trentyn Flowers, Emanuel Miller, and Lachlan Olbrich are all going to be putting in reps with the Windy City Bulls, Chicago’s G League affiliate.

Dosunmu, like all of the Bulls (and all of their fans), is frustrated by his team’s miserable 4-14 run following a stellar 6-1 season start.

“We need to play harder,” the 25-year-old said, blaming the club’s lackluster energy a bit on a compounded effect incurred from this losing run.

    Where the Bulls Stand Now

At 10-15, the Bulls occupy the Eastern Conference’s No. 11 seed, although the team is mere percentage points worse than the No. 10-seeded Milwaukee Bucks (11-16). Bringing Dosunmu back into the fold could help at least shore up the Bulls’ perimeter defense somewhat, which could, in turn, help them in their quest to jump Milwaukee.

If this brutal recent stretch for Chicago — they’ve dropped eight of their last nine games — continues much longer, head coach Billy Donovan may be forced to make some starting lineup adjustments. Ditching perpetually plodding malcontent Nikola Vucevic in favor of a higher-upside defender like the oft-injured Zach Collins or Jalen Smith feels like the obvious first place to start, but in theory, Donovan could sub in Dosunmu and demote one of his two ball-dominant starting guards, Josh Giddey or Coby White, to a bench role, though that seems much less likely.

Ultimately, this could be a fairly marginal injury update, since Dosunmu might even play on Wednesday. Still, it sounds like the thumb sprains themselves are going to linger for a bit to some extent.

Does that mean he’ll be occasionally sat for parts of back-to-backs in the interest of recovery via long-term rest? Could the thumb issue adversely affect Dosunmu’s shooting? Both are certainly possible outcomes.

Through his 20 healthy games so far this season, Dosunmu has been averaging a career-high 15.2 points on .519/.475/.857 shooting splits, plus 3.2 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.6 steals per game. He’s one of Chicago’s better two-way talents, as probably its best defensive guard and a fairly efficient scorer.

If health proves not to be an issue, Dosunmu’s team-friendly expiring $7.5 million contract becomes a massive trade chip for team president Arturas Karnisovas.

Dosunmu should absolutely have a market for his services. Whether or not Chicago can extract a ton for him at this point remains to be seen.

Pseudo-contending teams in need of some backcourt 3-and-D contributions (the Orlando Magic sans Jalen Suggs, the Minnesota Timberwolves, or the very desperate Milwaukee Bucks) may be willing to sacrifice some level of draft capital for short-term help, although the brevity of Dosunmu’s money could limit the assets Chicago might get back.
