It’s a bit of an odd fit for the Diamondbacks unless they’re just so desperate to trade away Ketel Marte that they consider him gone no matter what, but, yes, if he’s gone, then they could use Bregman.
Speaking of which, it’s extra funky to think about Bregman and Scott Boras negotiating with both the Red Sox and Diamondbacks … while the Diamondback and Red Sox talk about a Marte trade, the outcome of which could remove one suitor from the mix and replace it with another. Seems like a situation absolutely RIFE for shenanigans on the rumor mill. So much opportunity for subterfuge and misdirection.
Of course, the flip side of that is if everyone involved is on the same page (i.e., Red Sox and Ketel Marte want to marry up, and the Diamondbacks prefer to swap in Alex Bregman), maybe this somehow greases the skids to get both deals done. Everyone involved bends a little bit for the overall outcome? I have no idea how you’d actually negotiate something like that – lots of innuendo, I suppose.
The DBacks trying to force the Red Sox into making an ugly deal for Marte seems like the least plausible explanation here, because, for one thing, there are reportedly lots of suitors for Marte, not just the Red Sox. Moreover, I’m not sure the Red Sox would buy that the Diamondbacks are going to carry all of Bregman, Marte, and Lawlar anyway.
The other possibility here (most plausible?) is that Boras is simply trying to find any other possible way to goose a Bregman market that hasn’t yet exploded. Maybe the idea to pressure a team or two that isn’t Boston or Arizona, making them worry that a combo deal is about to go down. Similarly, maybe the Diamondbacks are trying to give Marte trade talks a push, letting folks know it could be close with the Red Sox (so come with a better offer ASAP if you have one).
I know this all sounds a little conspiratorial, but (1) as we’ve discussed repeatedly, this stuff gets out for a reason; and (2) that’s all the more obvious when TWO reports get the info at the same time. Someone is pushing this out right now, and there is some edge they are looking to gain, or some attention they’re looking to get.
Best guess? This is about getting some non-Diamondbacks/non-Red Sox team to step up their offer for Bregman, *OR* this is about trying to get everyone involved in the whole Marte thing (whichever teams, including Boston) to wrap things up so it stops holding up other moves. And if it’s that second one, then it could very well be that Bregman is a domino that falls right after, to the Diamondbacks or some other club.
