Simu Liu finally shared the story behind his proposal with partner Allison Hsu.
The couple announced their engagement on May 11, 2025, via Instagram. Liu revealed that the proposal happened during a weekend trip to Paris, while he was in London filming the upcoming Marvel movie. The Canadian-American actor was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night to promote his upcoming TV series, The CopenhagenTest, a sci-fi thriller that follows an intelligence agent who is hacked and must prove his allegiance.
At the beginning of his segment, Fallon started off by congratulating the actor for his engagement, which led him to talk about how "stressful" planning a proposal is, especially for his partner, whom he sweetly called "a control enthusiast." When Hsu found out that Liu was planning the trip to Paris, she asked him if she should get her nails done, so the actor was convinced that she had an idea that he was going to pop the question that weekend. But, he did not tell her that he flew in her siblings and closest friends to Paris.
Another surprise Liu planned was getting Hsu's favorite artist involved. The Barbie actor prefaced the story by saying that his fiancée works in music marketing and grew up as a huge Taylor Swift fan, so her songs were a big part of getting to know her throughout the beginning of their relationship. Since Liu had met Swift a couple of times, he reached out to her publicist and asked if there was any way they could convince the singer to record a quick video just to say congratulations. Two days later, Swift sent over the video, and Liu was able to play it for his fiancée.
"So, Taylor Swift was the cherry on top," he concluded the story. "[Hsu] was really emotional before, and then when I played that video, she just completely lost it."
Hsu works as the Digital Marketing Director at Interscope Records and was a part of the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2022. She kicked off the relationship rumors in November 2022 with a photo she shared to Instagram of herself and Liu, with a simple ":)" as the caption. Since then, the couple has been on many romantic vacations together and made appearances at multiple red carpet events, Fashion Weeks and courtside games in Los Angeles.
The Copenhagen Test starring Liu and Melissa Barrera premieres on Peacock on Dec. 27, 2025. Meanwhile, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallonairs every weekday on NBC at 11:35 pm ET.
