Letters: Readers on gun control after recent mass shootings

Gun control most likely will not affect or change the likelihood of tragedies such such as Sydney’s Bondi Beach shootings.

This was a hate crime against Jews which has festered for centuries. Racial characteristics, religious differences, and economic pursuits have lead to resentment aimed at the Jewish people.

Limiting the number of guns a person can own is not the answer. It only takes one gun. That said, keeping green card holders from legally owning guns might put a better handle on gun ownership. I think all countries should restrict certain privileges from non-citizens.

Mass shootings are the way very troubled individuals speak their mind.

Family and friends should speak up when things don’t look right. There are very often big warning signs.

    Same old debate

In politics, it seems like we have been having the same old discussion for decades. The toothpaste is out of the tube.

Guns are available to anyone who wants them whether they are legal or not. Many times, the offender of these abhorrent mass shootings has never been on any one’s radar, rendering strict laws useless.

The people closest to these individuals are the only deterrent. They have to do the hard thing and make everyone in their community aware of the danger we have in our midst.

Political lip service about wanting gun control has become insulting. Nothing ever changes. One thing we have in our power, as a society, is to demand that those in charge keep dangerous people in cages once they show their evil towards others.

    Shawn Ferguson, Westminster

    Let’s think for a moment.

To logically reply to the “Question of the Week,” one needs to acknowledge that there are three tribes of opinions on the subject.

First, a minority if our citizens don’t understand why anyone should ever have a gun and believe that total civilian disarmament the only answer to end violent crimes.

The second minority are those who believe in the 2nd Amendment and “when guns are outlawed, only the outlaws will have guns.”

The last group is the majority of citizens who don’t want to be bothered by “politics.”

Sadly, logic and history have little influence to significantly move the needle on the population of these buckets.

That being said, ask yourself that if you or a family member were under immediate threat of a violent criminal, is it morally wrong to want defend yourself?
