ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A simple idea from a student at Genesee Community Charter School in Rochester turned into a big community effort to help classmates feel confident and supported.
Heyenim Elisha Drumgoole Bahlei, a sixth grader at GCCS, had the initial idea to provide clothing for students. Her mom suggested taking it a step further by offering free haircuts.
“My mom had the idea, she was like ‘hey, what if I call your barber, maybe another barber, and my hairstylist.’ I kind of wanted to stick with the clothing, but then she kept telling me that this would be a really good idea,” said Heyenim Elisha Drumgoole Bahlei.
Local barbers, including Stacy and Jay from Quick’s Mane Event Barbershop, volunteered their time and talent to make it happen. The event on Monday was available to the first 20 students to sign up on a first-come, first-served basis.
