BROCKPORT, N.Y. — The Brockport Arts Festival will continue to be held on Main Street, as it has been for the past 30 years. This decision came after a weeks-long discussion by the Brockport Village board.
The festival, previously co-hosted by the Village and the Brockport Integrated Service Clubs Organization (BISCO), will now be solely hosted by BISCO after the two entities dissolved their partnership.
However, this change led to concerns from the Village about costs for their Department of Public Works and police department.
“Never in the history of the event have there been negotiations for DPW and police services,” Kari Pardun of BISCO said. “We came into this willing to pay for the DPW overtime because in the role of the village running the event for the past couple of years, we know that costs incurred.”
Pardun said BISCO agreed to pay for police overtime for overnight security or hire outside security, as requested by the Village. However, they say they did not receive a timely response from the Village.
Mayor Ben Reed explained the delay was to ensure everything was up to code and lawful. “It was just making sure that we crossed our T’s and dotted our I’s,” Reed said. “We never once, as a board, thought that it shouldn’t be on Main Street.”
Reed added, “Our duty to the public is to look out for the best interest of the village. And that’s just what we were doing.”
Festival organizer Kathy Kristansen was glad to hear the news, adding it’s a massive boost for local businesses and organizations. “It just a shot in the arm and it helps so many people, helps our merchants, and God only knows they need our help.”
The festival is set to return on August 8th-9th. Organizers plan to open sign-ups for vendors in the coming weeks.
