Before they each became famous on TV, Rob Reiner and future “General Hospital” icon Anthony Geary acted together in one of the first episodes of “All in the Family,” the classic 1970s sitcom that catapulted Reiner to stardom.
In a February 1971 episode, Geary guest-starred as a good friend of Reiner’s character Mike “Meathead” Stivic, the liberal son-in-law of Carroll O’Connor’s bigoted Archie Bunker, People magazine reported. O’Connor’s Bunker suspects that Geary’s character is gay because he wears a cravat neckband and the era’s signature “Moptop” men’s hairstyle, which was made famous by the Beatles. (That episode also featured another future soap opera legend, “One Life to Live” star Philip Carey, who reveals to Archie that he’s gay.)
Back in 1971, both Geary and Reiner had lots to look forward to professionally and otherwise, with Reiner later making a name for himself as an acclaimed Hollywood director and producer, while Geary became a 1980s pop culture sensation for his role as antihero Luke Spencer on the ABC daytime soap opera “General Hospital.”
Sadly, both Reiner and Geary died on the same day, and both were 78.

(AP Photo/Kevin Wolf, File) Kevin Wolf/Associated Press ArchivesReiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were both found slain Sunday afternoon in their home in the posh Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Their daughter found their bodies and called police, with the deaths instantly sending shockwaves throughout Hollywood and American culture. Reiner was hailed by other celebrities and former presidents for his work as a director on such beloved films as “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “A Few Good Men.”
More shock waves followed Monday morning with news that police had identified the Reiners’ oldest son, Nick Reiner, 32, as the suspect. Nick Reiner was booked into Los Angeles jail with bail set at $4 million. Rob and Nick Reiner had previously been open about Nick’s years-long efforts to overcome drug addiction, while new reports in TMZ and People suggested that Nick wasn’t currently sober and was struggling with serious mental illness, leaving his parents “at wit’s end” with how to help him.
In November 1981, Laura (Genie Francis) and Luke (Anthony Geary) got married on the grounds of the Port Charles mayor’s mansion, and the long-awaited nuptials, which included guest star Elizabeth Taylor, landed some of the highest ratings in soap opera history. (Photo by: Bob D’Amico / ABC Photo Archives)Meanwhile, Geary, who was living in the Netherlands, died Sunday from complications from a scheduled operation three days earlier, the website TV Insider reported. “It was a shock for me and our families and our friends,” Geary’s husband, Claudio Gama, said. “For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”
As The Hollywood Reporter said, Geary won an unprecedented eight Daytime Emmy Awards for creating the role of Luke, a complicated figure who started out on the show as a hitman with ties to the mob. He finds his way to romancing Genie Francis’ Laura Webber Baldwin by first raping her, though the incident was framed as a seduction, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
As Geary’s Luke and Francis’ Laura fell in love, they became one of the most beloved super couples in the world of day-time soap operas, and their November 1981 wedding was one of the most-watched soap episode of all time and one of the most memorable moments in TV history, The Hollywood Reporter said. Not only did it attract 30 million viewers, it featured Elizabeth Taylor in a guest starring role and inspired the late Princess Diana to send the actors champagne.
