Daytime Emmy-winning actor Anthony Geary has died at age 78. This death was confirmed following complications from surgery last week.
Rachel Schwartz, the Head of Daytime, Children’s and Family Programming for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) shared condolences following the news. “Our condolences are with our friends at 'General Hospital' on the passing of Anthony Geary, who won a record-breaking eight Emmys in the Lead Actor category,” Schwartz said.
Geary won his first Daytime Emmy in 1982 for his work as Luke Spencer on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. He went on to win seven additional Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Daytime Drama Series, with his final win occurring in 2015.
Schwartz continued, “As one half of the power couple 'Luke and Laura,' their popularity brought daytime television into the zeitgeist and created one of the genre's most beloved super-couples. Our sympathies are with his family, colleagues, and loved ones

Over the course of his career, Geary received 16 Daytime Emmy Award nominations between his first nomination in 1981 and his last nomination in 2016.
Geary began his daytime television career in 1971 portraying the role of David Lockheart on the NBC series Bright Promise. He then briefly appeared on CBS’ The Young and the Restless as George Curtis in 1973 before landing the role of Luke Spencer on General Hospital in 1978.
Originally intended as a 13-week storyline, Geary’s on-screen chemistry with co-star Genie Francis resonated strongly with audiences, ultimately transforming Luke Spencer into a career-defining role. Geary remained on General Hospital until his retirement from acting in 2015, after which he relocated to Amsterdam to live with his husband.
In addition to these roles, Geary's credits include appearances on All in the Family, The Partridge Family, Doc Elliot, The Streets of San Francisco, Fish Tank and many more.
TV Insider reported that prior to his death, Geary had filmed scenes for an upcoming project with former General Hospital co-star Anders Hoves, which will serve as Geary's final on-screen performance.
