Islamic State claims attack targeting road security personnel in Idlib

The Islamic State group (IS) claimed responsibility today, Monday 15 December, for an attack it said targeted personnel affiliated with Syria’s Ministry of Interior in southern Idlib Governorate.

In a statement published on its “Sah al-Wagha” website, which it uses to release official announcements, the group claimed it killed four members it described as “apostates” in an attack carried out by its fighters in southern Idlib countryside, as part of what it called “Wilayat al-Sham , Idlib.”

Four members of the Road Security Administration were ambushed on the road leading to Maarrat al-Numan (southern Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria) on Sunday 14 December. The Ministry of Interior did not name the party behind the attack in a statement published at the time on its Facebook page.

An Enab Baladi correspondent in Idlib reported then that unknown assailants targeted a security patrol near the city’s southern bridge, causing deaths and injuries.

Following the incident, specialized security units carried out intensive sweep operations in the area to pursue those involved in the attack, according to the Interior Ministry.

Enab Baladi obtained the names of those killed and photos of their bodies, but apologizes for not publishing them.

The group’s claim comes as its attacks increase in areas under the control of the Syrian government. The most recent was an attack targeting American and Syrian personnel at a Ministry of Interior security post in the Palmyra desert (eastern Homs Governorate) on 13 December.

The group also claimed an attack on customs police while they were escorting transit trucks in al-Zarbah (southern Aleppo countryside) on 4 December, which resulted in the killing of two customs officers.

It also said it was responsible for two assassination operations in Homs and Hama on 28 November. Through “Sah al-Wagha,” the group claimed its fighters targeted what it called “a candidate from the former Syrian regime,” along with a member of the new government, in the al-Tattan neighborhood of Hama, killing the first and wounding the second.

IS fighters also targeted a former member of what it called “Rafidite militias” in al-Mazra’a village (Homs countryside) with automatic weapons, killing him.

The Islamic State group also announced carrying out three operations in what it called “Wilayat al-Khayr” (Deir Ezzor Governorate), claiming it killed a government member it described as a spy in al-Bukamal (eastern Deir Ezzor, near the Iraqi border), and targeted two members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

In its statement, the group said its fighters killed what it described as “a spy for the apostate Syrian regime” in al-Bukamal on 27 November. It claimed the man had previously served in the SDF before leaving recently and becoming a spy for the “current regime,” alleging he used his work selling car spare parts to track IS movements and report on routes and locations in the area.
