Beloved actor Rob Reiner—known for his role of Mike "Meathead" Stivic in the classic sitcomAll in the Family, among many others—has died at the age of 78, according to TMZ.
News of Reiner's death was confirmed shortly after reports began circulating that two people were found dead inside a Brentwood home belonging to the legendary director on Sunday, December 14. Reiner's wife, Michele Singer, was also found deceased. She was 68.
TMZ reported the couple "suffered lacerations consistent with a knife," though the investigation is still underway.
LAPD Robbery Homicide Division detectives were assigned to the case, according to NBC LA.
The outlet reported that LAFD paramedics were called to the home on Sunday afternoon. Upon discovery of the bodies, LAPD was called in to investigate a murder case.
Reiner was born in the Bronx, New York, in March 1947. After relocating to the West Coast to attend UCLA Film School, Reiner began acting in small roles in such shows as The Beverly Hillbillies, The Andy Griffith Show, andBatman.
He rose to fame for his iconic role as Archie Bunker's liberal son-in-law in the 1970s hit, All in the Family, later claiming the nickname "Meathead" stuck with him for years after.
"At the London premiere of When Harry Met Sally, I was walking to meet Princess Di and someone shouted, 'Hey Meathead,'" he said in a 2003 interview with Manila Times. "Many times I’ve said I could win the Nobel Prize and they’d write 'Meathead wins the Nobel Prize.' I’ll never get past that."
In addition to his acting, Reiner was a renowned director, receiving critical acclaim for such films as A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, and The American President.
After his 1981 divorce from director Penny Marshall, Reiner met Singer while filming 1989's When Harry Met Sally. The two married that same year and later welcomed three children: son Jake in 1991, son Nick in 1993, and daughter Romy in 1997.
Reiner is also father to Marshall's daughter Tracy Reiner, whom he adopted during their marriage.
