Alabama handled Jackson State with a 62-51 victory Sunday afternoon. The matinee matchup served as the team’s ‘Holiday Hoops’ game and saw a halftime teddy bear toss for charity.
“We did a really nice job of finding a way to win an ugly game today,” head coach Kristy Curry said.
The teams traded buckets early in the first, with the Tigers holding a 13-12 lead over the Crimson Tide with 2:29 left in the quarter. Alabama then caught fire on the offensive end, scoring 8 straight points to take a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
The Crimson Tide got off to a slow start in the second quarter, as it surrendered a 10-4 run out of the gate and its lead was shaved down to 24-23 with 5:53 left in the half.
Alabama then seemed to flip a switch, and in a flash of lightning, another 8-straight points appeared on the scoreboard for the Crimson Tide. Increased defensive pressure on the ball across the floor helped disrupt possessions and led to Jackson State turnovers.
Alabama guard Diana Collins said that she and her teammates did a better job of taking advantage of transition points in the second quarter. She noted the importance of “getting stops” in order to open up the team’s offense in transition.
This newfound momentum helped Alabama take a double-digit lead into the locker room at 35-25.
Approximately 100 stuffed animals then rained down from the stands onto the floor during halftime for the teddy bear toss. Which is an annual tradition for Alabama women’s basketball that sees fans throw stuffed animals onto the court at halftime. The plush toys are then donated to charity for Christmas.
“I really appreciated everybody that came out,” Curry said about the evening’s promotional events. “We really appreciate the support.”
The third quarter featured a great deal of resistance from a Jackson State team that would not quit and looked determined to remain competitive.
The Tigers shrunk the Alabama lead down to 7 as the quarter progressed to get the score to 46-39 as the teams headed into the final frame.
Alabama began to find more success offensively in the fourth quarter. It outscored the Tigers 16-12, slamming the door on a potential Jackson State comeback, and secured an 11th consecutive victory to start the season.
Despite the victory, Curry believes her team was lacking in energy.
“I think we’ve got some people that need to check that effort,” she said. “We’ve got to continue to grow and figure out ways to affect the game beyond scoring points.”
Two notable exceptions to this lack of effort were Collins and forward Naomi Jones, who both scored career highs with 20 and 15 points respectively. The pair also accounted for 13 rebounds.
“Really proud of these two for showing up today and their energy and effort,” Curry said. “My challenge to them is to stay consistent with that.”
The Crimson Tide will merrily look ahead to its next game Tuesday against Sam Houston at home. The contest is set to tip off at 6 p.m. and can be streamed on SEC Network+.
