‘90s Country Icon Toby Keith Reaches Major Career Milestone With Two Songs Decades After Their Release

Toby Keithcontinues to pick up even more accolades following his untimely death that shook the country music community to its core.

The late country music icon has now earned two posthumous certifications from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for a pair of his most enduring hits. His 2002 No. 1 smash “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” has been certified 5 times Platinum, while his 1993 hit “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action” has earned a Gold certification.

Those achievements mean Keith has sold at least 500,000 units for the latter of those songs, while “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” has reached the five-million mark for units sold. The success of those tracks has yet to reach Diamond status, as those eligible for Diamond certification would need to sell 10 million units — a feat that has only been achieved 18 times in country music history, according to Whiskey Riff.  But with the track record of  “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” that win could come in due time.

Once controversial, “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” has gone on to become Keith’s highest-selling song, taking the lead over his other signature smash “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”  Written solely by Keith, the track stands as a bold expression of his patriotism and unwavering support for American troops. The tune, which also showcases The Big Dog Daddy’s strength behind the pen, was released in 2022 and belongs on his Unleashed album.

“A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action,” meanwhile, serves as a song Keith reimagined for his 1993 self-titled album. The tune was previously recorded by Hank Williams Jr. for his 1992 Maverick album. Written by Keith Hinton and Jimmy Alan Steward, “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action” is one of the few songs from Keith’s collection that he didn’t have a hand in writing.

Toby Keith Is One of the Highest-Selling Country Artists in History

Over the span of three decades, Keith amassed more than 61.5 million units sold and over 40 million albums, placing him as the 13th highest-selling country artist in history. His status puts him right behind stars like Garth Brooks, George Strait, Luke Combs, and Morgan Wallen.

Keith passed away on February 5, 2024, following a courageous battle with stomach cancer. He was 62. Since his passing, the country singer from Oklahoma has been honored in numerous ways. Before his death, Keith notched 20 No. 1 hit singles, more than 40 Top 10 hits, 10 No. 1 albums, 14 Academy of Country Music Award trophies, and countless other achievements. His influence on country music endures, and his voice, both literal and lyrical, continues to resonate.
