I think I was probably in my 50s before it dawned on me that I had an addictive personality,” he shared, noting that giving up cigarettes and alcohol was transformative. “So I got rid of booze and cigarettes and all that stuff, which is probably why I’m still here.”
Fitness also remains central to his routine. In his new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life, Van Dyke reveals that he still “tries to hit the gym three times a week,” following a full circuit workout fueled by loud music and rewarded with a smoothie or a nap.
