A teen from Chicago was killed in a pile-up crash that occurred during heavy snowfall in Springfield Saturday.
According to the Sangamon County coroner, the 14-year-old girl was a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in the crash in Springfield, which unfolded on Interstate 55.
Police say the crash occurred near milepost 98, near the interchange with Interstate 72, at approximately 10:38 a.m. Saturday.
The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Heavy snow was reported in the area at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
While the extent of the pileup has not been reported, footage from the scene posted on social media showed more than 10 vehicles appeared to have been involved, including at least three semis.
The National Weather Service office in Lincoln, Illinois, shared an image from an Illinois Department of Transportation crew showing a large backup stemming from the crash.
The pileup occurred as widespread snow hit central Illinois, leading to snow-covered roads and slippery conditions.
