First Alert Weather: Arctic air and lake effect snow today

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Highs today will only be in the upper teens and wind chill values will remain in the single digits. Needless to say that if you’re heading out you need a warm jacket. A band of lake effect snow will cause a brief burst of moderate to heavy snow moving north to south near midday, followed by lighter lake snow showers. Accumulations will be a few tenths of an inch near the FLX to 1-3″ north of the Thruway.

Tomorrow a clipper system restarts the lake effect snow. The morning commute should not be impacted but the evening commute may. There is uncertainty as to how far a snow band off of Lake Erie will reach, how intense it will be, and what time it may be near Rochester. If it is trending more towards the evening commute and looking impactful, we’ll issue a Yellow Alert. Stay tuned for an update. Temperature-wise, it will still be cold; in the mid 20s at best.

A break in the snow on Tuesday as temperatures rise to freezing (melting?) point, then Wednesday we’re at 40. Thursday into the mid 40s… Rain that night, turning back to snow Friday as temperatures plummet once again. Overall however, temperatures are expected to be slightly above average over the next 6 to 14 days.
