ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Hope Hall School in Rochester held its annual woodworking sale on Saturday.
The sale featured a large collection of handcrafted wood items, including toys, home decor, and furniture. Proceeds from the sale supported the school’s woodworking program, which is part of its multi-sensory educational approach.
The school’s woodworking program was founded in 2004, and combines academic instruction with “hands-on career focused development.”
“Developing their skills in terms of the skill trades is one of the hallmarks of our program, so we have a woodworking program, and the price of lumber has gone up,” said Diana Dolce of Hope Hall School. “The price of even the fixtures and everything has gone way up. So we combine math and woodworking for the kids,” Dolce said.
The program started as an afterschool club, but is now a course students in grades 10th-12th can earn credits for.
Hope Hall is a nonprofit, private school for children with special needs. The school was founded in 1994 for students who experience frustration in traditional academic settings.
