Donald Trump has vowed that the US “will retaliate” after two American soldiers and one civilian were killed in a suspected Islamic State (IS) attack in Syria.
Three other service members were injured during the ambush by a lone gunman, believed to be part of IS, which is often referred to as Isis in Syria and Iraq.
The US Central Command said the gunman had been “engaged and killed”.
The incident marked the first deadly attack on US troops since the fall of President Bashar Assad last year.
“This is an Isis attack,” the US president told reporters at the White House on Saturday.
After paying condolences to the three people killed, the US President said the three others who were wounded “seem to be doing pretty well”.
In an earlier post on Truth Social, Trump said “there will be very serious retaliation”.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack and the gunman’s identity has not been released.
