UN fact-finding committee arrives in Quneitra amid Israeli incursions

A UN fact-finding committee arrived in Quneitra province (southwestern Syria, bordering the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights) today, 13 December, as the Israeli army continues incursions, arrests, and the establishment of checkpoints in the area.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent said a delegation from the UN fact-finding committee reached Quneitra to document violations by the Israeli army in these areas, where scarcely a day passes without Israeli forces carrying out either an arrest operation or a ground incursion.

The correspondent added that the committee will meet residents to hear their complaints and testimonies about what they have experienced as a result of Israeli violations. The delegation will also inspect damage caused by Israeli incursions to civilians’ property, homes, and farmland.

Hours before the committee arrived, an Israeli military force consisting of eight military vehicles entered the village of Sida al-Hanout (southern Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria).

The Israeli force set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the village and searched homes for weapons, according to a local activist who asked not to be named for security reasons.

The activist said Israeli soldiers questioned residents about the situation in Syria and attempted to entice them by offering aid, but residents refused to engage with the forces.

Israeli forces released two people on Friday, 12 December, whom they had detained while the two were passing through a checkpoint set up between Umm Batnah (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria) and the village of al-Ajraf (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria).

An Israeli patrol consisting of six military vehicles also advanced on Friday evening toward the western and eastern villages of Al-Samdaniyah (northern Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria).

    Clashes

On 9 December, Israeli army patrols advanced in the vicinity of Jabah, Khan Arnabeh, and Ain al-Nuriyah (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria). They set up temporary checkpoints at the al-Suqri junction and at the eastern entrances to the area, using military vehicles and armored personnel carriers.

While the eastern checkpoint near Khan Arnabeh was being set up, Israeli soldiers opened fire on civilians who tried to object to the patrol’s presence by throwing stones, wounding three people: Hamza al-Dabbak, Mohammad al-Dabbak, and Nasser al-Bakr, according to multiple sources Enab Baladi contacted.

The media relations office at the Quneitra Directorate of Information said Israeli forces also fired on another civilian near Hamidiyah town (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria), without additional information on the person’s health condition.

The office added that the Israeli army set up three checkpoints around Khan Arnabeh, including one on the al-Salam highway that connects Damascus and Quneitra. The checkpoint coincided with the passage of a convoy from Syria’s Ministry of Interior that was returning from a mission in Damascus.

Israeli patrols withdrew after firing on civilians and reopened the highway.

After the patrols withdrew, residents of Khan Arnabeh held a protest vigil in the town to denounce what Israeli soldiers had done, according to local activist Odai al-Khabi.

The area Israeli forces advanced into and seized covers 346 square kilometers. They established nine military bases there, including eight in Quneitra: the Mount Hermon observatory and Tal al-Ahmar hills in the northern countryside, Qurs al-Nafl in Hadar (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria), the Jubata al-Khashab forest, which includes a helicopter landing pad, Hamidiyah town, al-Adnaniyah (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria), Tal al-Ahmar al-Gharbi in Kudna (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria), and the destroyed city of Quneitra. An additional base was set up at the Jazira Dam in the Yarmouk Basin (western Daraa countryside, southwestern Syria).

    Intimidation mixed with inducements

Israeli forces installed an iron gate at the entrance to al-Samdaniyah al-Gharbiya (Quneitra countryside, southwestern Syria), isolating the village from its surroundings.

They also established 260 temporary checkpoints and detained some young men in the area. Some were held for hours before being released, while the number of detainees who have not been released reached 34.

Enab Baladi documented three incidents in which Israeli settlers stormed Quneitra, attempting to establish a settlement inside Syrian territory before the Israeli army returned them to the occupied Golan.

Israel has also tried to win over residents by offering food aid, which locals have consistently refused, sometimes burning it.
