Beloved Theme Park to Shut Down After Nearly Five Decades

Wild Waves Theme Park, a Pacific Northwest summer staple for nearly 50 years, will close its gates for good after the 2026 season.

The Federal Way attraction announced that next year—running from May 23 to November 1—will mark its final season of operation, ending an era for generations of families who grew up riding Timberhawk, floating the lazy river or celebrating Halloween at Fright Fest.

In a statement, Kieran Burke, President and Owner of Premier Parks, said the decision comes down to finances that never fully recovered in the years following the pandemic.

“Unfortunately, the rising cost of ongoing operations since reopening after the COVID shutdown has generated millions in losses, which forces us to discontinue operations at the end of our 2026 season,” Burke shared.

He also expressed gratitude to the millions of guests and hundreds of employees who have kept the park running since it first opened in 1977.

Wild Waves—Washington’s largest combined theme and water park—employs about 35 full-time staff and roughly 800 seasonal workers each year.

The park confirmed that all 2026 season passes, group events and ticket packages will be honored, and that the final season will still feature the full lineup guests expect: summertime water attractions, classic thrill rides and its popular Fright Fest celebration each October.

Despite the closure, park leaders say they intend to make 2026 a celebration. “In its final year of operation, the park will celebrate the memories, nostalgia and family fun with themed events and special promotions,” Burke said.

Property owner Jeff Stock echoed that sentiment, thanking visitors and employees while hinting at the future of the 70-acre site.

“We recognize the deep history and emotional connection many residents have with the park, and we are committed to ensuring a respectful transition while planning a project that will bring meaningful, lasting benefits to the area,” Stock noted.

Plans for redevelopment are underway, though details remain in early stages.

For locals who’ve long considered Wild Waves part of their summer tradition, 2026 will be a last chance to splash, scream and soak up the nostalgia before the gates close for the final time.
