King Charles to have cancer treatment reduced in 2026

King Charles has announced that his cancer treatment will be reduced in the new year as he praised medical staff, researchers and charities working “tirelessly to save and improve lives”.

In a heartwarming speech delivered on Friday, the King highlighted the importance of cancer screenings, saying that early diagnosis “quite simply saves lives”.

Buckingham Palace announced that Charles, 77, had been diagnosed with cancer in February 2024, with the disease detected during an operation for an enlarged prostate. He has decided not to reveal the type of cancer he has.

In a video message delivered from Clarence House, the King said that early diagnosis and treatment has enabled him to “continue leading a full and active life”.

He said: “Indeed, today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders’, my ownschedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the new year.

“This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testimony to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care in recent years; testimony that I hope may give encouragement to the 50 per cent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives.”

The King’s message was broadcast as part of this year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign.

The campaign, run by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4, raises funds for treatment and medical research into the disease. It also encourages people to receive check-ups and screenings to increase the chances of an early diagnosis.

Charles also advocated for the use of the new national Screening Checker, which helps people find out if they are eligible for breast, bowel or cervical cancer screening.

“It demystifies the process, answers your questions, and guides you towards taking that crucial step,” he said.

“As I have observed before, the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion. But compassion must be paired with action.

“This December, as we gather to reflect on the year past, I pray that we can eachpledge, as part of our resolutions for the year ahead, to play our part in helpingto catch cancer early.

“Your life – or the life of someone you love – may depend upon it.”

The King began his speech by asking people to “join me today in finding a special place in your hearts, and your minds and prayers for the hundreds of thousands of people across our United Kingdom who receive a cancer diagnosis each year – and for the millions more who love and care for them”.

Turning to the importance of early treatment and diagnosis, he went on to say that “at least nine million people in our country are not up to date with the cancer screenings available to them.

“That is at least nine million opportunities for early diagnosis beingmissed.”

He said that “people avoid screening because they imagine it may befrightening, embarrassing or uncomfortable. If and when they do finally take uptheir invitation, they are glad they took part.

“A few moments of minor inconvenience are a small price to pay for the reassurance that comes for most people when they are either told either they don’t need further tests, or, for some, are given the chance to enable early detection, with the life-saving intervention that can follow.”

Charles concluded his speech by giving his “most heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, researchers and charity workers involved in diagnosis and treatmentprogrammes, together with my particular good wishes to those for whom they care so selflessly”.

    What your money could buy

£5 could print five storybooks to help a child understand the cancer treatment they are having. £10 could buy food so families can cook a meal to enjoy together away from the hospital canteen. £18 helps power a Home from Home for a day. £52 means a social worker could provide emotional and practical support (such as applying for financial help or attending difficult appointments) so children and their families don’t have to face cancer alone. £70 could pay for a family stay in a Young Lives vs Cancer Home from Home so they can be near their child in hospital with cancer. £100 could fund a hardship grant for families.

Despite undergoing cancer treatment, the King has taken several overseas trips this year, including to Italy and Canada. He has also hosted the biggest number of state visits to the UK for almost 40 years, including one from the German president last week.

Friday evening’s Stand Up To Cancer show on Channel 4, presented by celebrities including Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will encourage people not to be afraid of getting cancer checks.

All three have been affected by cancer. McCall said last month she had undergone surgery for breast cancer, while Balding was treated for thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago.

Hills has previously spoken about his late father, who had stomach cancer and leukaemia.
