WASHINGTON DC – 5:30pm on a Friday afternoon in Washington is normally the favoured moment when politicians choose to release news that they hope will get buried from public view as weekend festivities get under way. The Democrats on Friday decided to put 19 new images from the estate of sex-trafficking financier Jeffrey Epstein into the public domain at around 10:30 in the morning, guaranteeing the release would dominate the day’s news cycle and be discussed all weekend long.
The fact that one of the images shows Bill Clinton alongside Epstein and his jailed girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, suggests that – if necessary – Democrats on Capitol Hill are now willing to sacrifice the honour and reputation of their former president in order to advance the investigative cause. But Clinton’s presence in the latest release of photographs from the Epstein estate, is largely eclipsed by other pictures from the Epstein files that show Donald Trump and Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
For both the President and the former Duke of York, the release raises fresh questions about the nature of their respective relationships with Epstein. For Trump, the redacted nature of two of the photographs will immediately set tongues wagging: in one, the President stands alongside six women wearing Hawaiian leis, and one of the women appears to have her head resting on Trump’s shoulder. Only Trump’s identity has been revealed in the photograph, after Democrats on the House Oversight Committee chose to disguise – or possibly protect – the identities of the women in the picture.
A second undated image shows Trump, seemingly aboard a private jet with a blonde woman sitting alongside him. Again, the woman’s identity is obscured. A further picture shows a bowl full of condoms that are named after Trump, retailing for $4.50 a piece. “I’m HUUUGE!” reads the packaging on what appears to be a parody item.
One of the photos released by the committee (Photo: Democrats on the House Oversight Committee)Andrew Mountbatten Windsor appears in a single image that was taken during the “Ready to Beat Malaria” summit convened in London in April 2018. Andrew is pictured alongside the King and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and the image appears to have been taken by a photographer working for the Getty Images agency at an event that brought 14 separate world leaders to London in an effort to reignite progress against the disease. Epstein is not seen in the picture, and it is unclear why the image is included in his estate’s archive.
One photo shows Jeffrey Epstein with Trump adviser Steve BannonFor other public figures, the release may cause fresh embarrassment. Gates is shown in several images, including one in which he is photographed alongside the apparent pilot of what may Epstein’s private jet. The photographs offer a fresh window into Epstein’s inner circle, with the film director Woody Allen appearing in four images, Trump adviser Steve Bannon shown in three pictures, and Virgin mogul Richard Branson appearing in one photograph taken on a beach with Epstein passing behind him. Attorney Alan Dershowitz is also seen locked in conversation with Epstein in what appears to be an office environment.
Republicans rounded on Democrats, accusing them of “cherry-picking photos” pulled from a collection in the Oversight Committee’s possession that numbers more than 95,000 separate images. They attacked Democrats for “making targeted redactions to create a false narrative about President Trump”, and again accused the President’s opponents of manufacturing a “hoax” to discredit him.

But on the steps of the Capitol on Friday morning, Democrats were presenting themselves as leaders of the effort to shed light on Epstein’s activities and his relationships with the rich and the powerful. Congressman Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the Committee, said “we will not rest until the American people get the truth. The Department of Justice must release all the files, NOW.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi faces a December 19th deadline for the release of Epstein documents in the Department’s possession, after the House and Senate passed bills last month requiring the files’ publication. But Bondi has warned that some documents relate to “ongoing investigations” arising from undisclosed “new evidence” that she claims to have received about Epstein.
Victims and their families fear the Attorney General is establishing a pretext from holding some documents back next week, which will only further fuel claims of a White House cover-up.
