A University of Northern Colorado football player is spending the weekend in New York City and going to the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
Myles McClarity, a sophomore safety for the Bears, is not among the four finalists for college football’s most prestigious honor.
Any NCAA-eligible football player can win the Heisman, but winners have traditionally come from large, Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools. UNC plays at the Football Championship Subdivision level where the schools and programs are smaller.
McClarity will be in New York sightseeing, going to the Heisman ceremony and meeting past winners as a guest of the Joy+Us Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit founded by television sports journalist Holly Rowe. Rowe is probably best known as a sideline reporter for ESPN and ABC.
Joy+Us was created to “spark joy in the lives of those who need it most,” according to the foundation website.
McClarity was diagnosed with leukemia when he was in high school. After 3 ½ years of treatments, McClarity returned to the field this fall for the first time as a college player. He came to UNC more than a year ago from the Colorado Springs area, but was previously restricted in what he could do. McClarity played in all 12 games for the Bears this fall, primarily on special teams. He was one of two college football players selected to go to the Heisman ceremony by the foundation. McClarity was nominated by his mother, Faith Getty, this fall without his knowledge. He learned of his selection for the trip during a video conversation with Rowe.
McClarity will be joined in New York by Missouri Western defensive lineman Teyon Brewer.
“You grow up and you want to be those guys and you see them on the cover of NCAA back in the day,” McClarity said of the Heisman Trophy and players considered for the award. “Everyone knows the Heisman pose. It’s something special.”
Rowe has covered high-profile events such as the NCAA Women’s Final Four, college football and men’s college basketball, the WNBA and NCAA Women’s College World Series, her website says.
Ten years ago, she was diagnosed with an advanced and rare form of skin cancer. Rowe is now an advocate for cancer research and prevention, the Joy+Foundation website says. She began keeping a journal to record moments of joy and happiness during her illness.
The foundation site says joy kept Rowe going during a difficult time in her life. Rowe and the foundation want to do this for others.
In an email Thursday, the foundation said the nominations submitted for McClarity and Brewer were reviewed by the organization.
Joy+Us looks for young people who have faced significant life challenges, shown resilience and continue to lead with heart, kindness and determination.
“Myles and Teyon exemplify everything Joy+Us represents, and both were selected based on the power of their stories and the impact they’ve had on those around them,” the email said. The trips are covered by the foundation, including flights, hotel, meals, event access and curated moments designed to spark joy for these deserving young people and their families, the email added.
McClarity and his mother leave Friday for New York and return Sunday. This is a first for McClarity. He’s never visited New York.
“Everyone knows New York and I don’t know the ins and the outs,” he said, referring to sights often seen on TV and in movies. Times Square is high on his list.
“I’m ready to see anything,” he added.
