Folks, we’ve reached the middle of December and things are heating up all over the NHL. There are lots of rumors starting that aren’t specifically about whether or not Connor Bedard (and/or Macklin Celebrini) should be on Canada’s Olympic team and when/where Quinn Hughes is getting traded.
I plan on doubling back with some thoughts on the Hughes situation in a separate piece because there’s a lot to unpack there. But let’s take a quick lap around the NHL to look at some other newsworthy nuggets. The NHL’s Board of Governors meetings were this week, injuries are piling up all over the league and there are two new… jerseys… to consider for this year’s Winter Classic.
Spending Concerns?
Pierre LeBrun wrote a terrific piece for The Athletic coming out of the Board of Governors meetings that I highly recommend you read. In it, he talks to a pretty good assortment of front office executives about the quickly escalating salary cap ceiling and potential concerns about the high end going up too high for some teams.
In the piece, he quotes executives like Joe Sakic in Colorado, who’s happy his team won’t have to make any significant business decisions and/or struggle to dress a full roster for the next couple years. Other owners, like Senators owner Michael Andlauer, express some thoughts on spending wisely without the ceiling being a “target.” I thought these comments from a chairman in the Blackhawks’ division were on point and sum things up very well:
“I think maybe what’s not fully understood is the impact or the magnitude that revenue sharing has on all of this,” Winnipeg Jets chairman Mark Chipman said. “That was a focus of ours. And a number of other teams as well that are beneficiaries of that model that was put in place over 20 years ago.”
The revenue-sharing system got tweaked again in the new CBA.
“It did, and in a material way,” Chipman said. “So it’s just not a concern (whether or not as many teams will spend to the cap). The system is built, and you’re seeing the outcomes of it — I don’t think we’ve had this kind of competitive balance, at least not in the 15 years I’ve been in the league. And I think a good part of that can be attributed to: If you’re responsible and thoughtful about how you run your team, you should be competitive. You should be able to get yourself to the cap when you need to. I don’t see that changing at all. I think that’s inherent in the understanding of our agreement now with our partners, which is our players.”

The Bruins and Lightning gave us a first official look at their looks for the Winter Classic. My first impression: these are from an early 2000s video game that didn’t pay the NHL to license the logos of the teams. Viktor Medman is going to try to stop Rob Pastanak on a breakaway?
What do you think?

There are lots of players on IR in the Blackhawks’ division, and a few names were added to the list on Thursday. The biggest one: the Utah Mammoth announced Thursday that Logan Cooley will miss at least eight weeks because of a lower-body injury. By my math, that’s probably until the Olympics break in February.
The St. Louis Blues will be short-handed when they host the Blackhawks on Friday night. Jordan Kyrou is week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Torey Krug is already out for the year. Jimmy Snuggerud, Alexei Toropchenko and Nathan Walker are already on IR for the Blues.
The Minnesota Wild placed Mats Zuccarello and Jake Middleton on IR. They join Marco Rossi, Ryan Hartman and Vinnie Hinostroza on the shelf for Minnesota right now.
The Dallas Stars already have Tyler Seguin, Lian Bichsel and Adam Erne on LTIR. This scene from last night wasn’t great for Roope Hintz. The Blackhawks visit Dallas in their first game after the Christmas break on Dec. 27.

A quick rundown of some other injury and other significant players missing from rosters right now:
The Blackhawks are in Toronto on Tuesday and could face a banged up Leafs squad. Oliver Ekman-Larsson got hurt last night and will reportedly be evaluated further today. Brandon Carlo had surgery last week and is out for about a month. And Luke Fox reported there might be an update on Chris Tanev today. The injuries are piling up for Tampa right now, too. Victor Hedman is reportedly getting a second opinion on how to deal with whatever injury kept him out of a dozen games already this season. That isn’t ideal on its own. When you add to that Ryan McDonagh on IR, Erik Cernak on LTIR and Andrei Vasilevskiy on IR, lots of significant holes to fill for Jon Cooper. And he thought the Olympic roster for Canada had some tough decisions coming! The New Jersey Devils are already without Jack Hughes. Now they’ll be without Timo Meier for some time as he’s taken leave to deal with a family matter.#NEWS: Timo Meier has taken a personal leave of absence from the team as he tends to a family health matter. The entire organization supports Timo and his family and appreciates everyone respecting their privacy at this time. t.co/0qpBXTFDHp
