Day 2 of the 2025 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – West is done and dusted, and endeavour as we might it can be tough to keep up with every single swim that is worth highlighting. We’ve pulled out a few below which may not have jumped out but are certainly worth an extra mention.

Isabella Muir was the winner of the girls’ 500 free ‘B’ final last night, but would have placed 4th in the ‘A’ final with her time of 4:45.75. That hacked over four seconds from her morning swim of 4:50.10, and she lowered her best time coming into this meet by a staggering ten seconds.

The Princeton commit was 4:56.11 at Speedo Sectionals – Justin back in March, and at this time just 12 months ago she was yet to break the 5:00 barrier. Her best stood at 5:03. 87, marking a remarkable 18 second drop over the year. Having not qualified for this meet in 2024, she is one of its top 500 freestylers in 2025.

We had a similar performance in the men’s 500 free as well, with Aadin Terrazas dropping a 4:18.81 to win the ‘C’ final. He placed 23rd this morning in 4:26.16, a second off his entry time of 4:25.05, but hacked several seconds off to dip below not only 4:20, but also 4:25 for the first time.

That would have placed him 2nd in prelims, and was just three-quarters of a second off the bronze medal-winning time of 4:18.06 that Andrew Maksymowski swam.

Maksymowski himself was one to keep an eye on. Fresh from a 1:35.70 leadoff on the 800 free relay last night, third-fastest in the field, he dropped 4.35 seconds over the course of the day in the 500 free. He knocked two seconds off his entry time of 4:22.43 this morning, placing 5th in 4:20.40, and dropped both two seconds and two spots to claim a spot in the top-three.

Gabi Brito did the double today, winning both the 200 IM and the 50 free in personal best times. She took over seven seconds off her 200 IM best, rising from #76 with a 2:03.52 entry time, to #3 after a 1:58.70 in this morning’s heats. She dropped nearly three more seconds last night, dipping under 1:56 in a time of 1:55.99 and holding off a fast-charging Mikayla Tan.

She sliced two tenths off her best in the 50 free final to touch first in 22.09, giving her three titles from four events so far. She was part of the gold medal-winning 200 medley relay team for Beach Cities Alpha on Wednesday.

Millie Knudson was the only 14-year-old to qualify for any of the three finals in the girls’ 50 free, qualifying this morning for the ‘C’ final in 22.97 after entering with a long course entry time of 25.72. That was her first swim under 23 seconds, dropping four-tenths from her previous best of 23.39, and she improved even further in the evening to go 22.89, placing joint-20th overall.

Avery Daiegle was another youngster to show some serious speed in the 50 free, placing 2nd tonight in 22.28 after coming into today with a best of 22.80. She was just off the 22.21 she swam to lead prelims, but was still over half a second and 14 places better off than her entry time.

Benjamin Jaggers had an even bigger drop in the men’s 50 free, taking nearly a second off his best today. The 17-year-old Waterloo Swimming athlete, who led off the Meet Record-setting 200 medley relay on Wednesday, dropped from 21.13 to 20.31. He sliced another tenth off to place 3rd in the ‘C’ final, touching in 20.21.

Jordan Ragland was unlikely to be one missed as he took the win in the 50 free, but it is worth highlighting just how far he has come since this time last year. He placed 6th in the ‘B’ final in 2024 in a time of 20.16, just off his best of 20.14 set in prelims. That was a near-half-second drop from his entry time of 20.60, swum a month beforehand.

He dropped nearly as much this year, despite coming in with a far faster entry time of 19.61, ranking him as the #4 seed. He dropped that to 19.39 in the morning, before slicing off a tenth to touch in 19.28 and claim gold.

Although Ty Thomas of River City Aquatics did not match Ragland in claiming an event title tonight, he delivered two more huge swims to back up his big best times from this morning. Having qualified fastest into the 200 IM final in 1:45.08, a four second drop, he sliced nearly a second off in the evening to touch 2nd in 1:44.21.

He was 19.75 in the 50 free ‘A’ final to place 5th, just off the 19.62 he swam in the morning. That as the first time he had broken 20 second in the event, and he is now certainly one to watch for the rest of the meet.

Micah Davis had an even bigger drop than Thomas to win the ‘C’ final. Entered on 1:52.14, he swam 1:48.62 to capture the #20 seed this morning before dropping another two seconds in the evening to win by nearly a second. His finals time of 1:46.59 would have comfortably qualified him for the ‘A’ final this morning, and was quicker than the ‘B’ final winning time of 1:46.74.

Nathan Foucu had the fastest anchor in the field in the boys’ 400 medley relay, splitting 42.54 to come exactly a full second under his flat-start best. Sutton Forbis had the standout swim in the girls’ event, taking eight tenths of a second off her 100 backstroke best to lead off in 52.89, which would jump her up 11 places in the psych sheets for the 100 back today from 14th to 3rd.
