Country Star Speaks Out After Admitting He ‘Let Myself Break Down’ in Tearful Video: ‘Sorry if I Scared You’

Jake Owen says he’s “back” and “in a better frame of mind” after posting a message earlier this week that had fans worried about his well-being and wondering if he’s doing OK.

For reference, on Tuesday, Dec. 9, the 44-year-old singer/songwriter posted a video that showed him in an emotional state as he reflected on both his personal and professional struggles. In the since-removed clip, Owen told fans he had been “crying my eyes out” as he questioned whether to continue in the music industry.

“It’s brought me a lot of happiness,” Owen, who was wearing a suit, acknowledged at the time, “but it’s also made my familylife miserable….I went downtown to give a check to my ex, and she can hand me back my ring… once it’s all over, it’s over.”

Now, in a new unscripted TikTok video, shared on Thursday, Dec. 11, Owen took a moment to clear up any confusion over his previously posted and then deleted clip, saying he regrets scaring “a lot of people” — some of whom he considers his friends. He also noted that he appreciates those who have checked in on him, but adds, “I didn’t mean for it to be that, I didn't ... .But, I’m grateful for those people out there that have reached out to tell me that you’d be there for me. I love you for that. I’m grateful for that.”

He Plans To Continue Pursuing His Musical Passions

The “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” singer went on to explain that he has no intention of leaving country music, despite having previously said otherwise.

“This has nothing to do with country music…All these people that I’m talking about who are friends, I made because of the music business,” he added in the video that has drawn support from stars like Luke Bryan, Lady A’s Charles Kelley, Dan + Shay, Chase Rice, and many more. “...I think I was just in an emotional place where I feel like my dreams that I followed, I’ve fulfilled, but yet, it’s also deteriorated my family life. And a lot of that is due to my own decisions and choices that I have to be accountable for, and I just wanted you guys to know that.”

He Has Remained Sober Since September 2021

Owen, who has celebrated his sobriety after remaining alcohol-free for four years, shut down any rumors that he is on “drugs” and “intoxicated,” but acknowledges that he isn’t perfect, saying, “I for sure don’t have it figured out. And I’m working on that….I’m just a guy that’s at a place in his life where he’s trying to just figure out how to be a better man…and I’m on my way.”

“Love you. I’m sorry if I scared you…,” he added, and also shared where he was in the original clip from Tuesday. “That was at like 10 o’clock in the morning after I left my business manager’s office. I was completely sober. I have been sober for four years. …I felt so good every day, up until yesterday, waking up and realizing I had that feeling again of letting people down and letting them see a side of me that was broken. So, I realized I still have healing to do. I still have things I need to fix. I’m not fixed yet… The other day, when I popped on here and was just overly emotional, I kind of let myself break down in front of the world.”

“My world consists of my little girls. I’m a father, I’m a son, I’m a brother, and I’m a friend to so many people….” Owen — who is a father to two girls, Olive Pearl and Paris Hartley — said, before insisting. "I don’t want to worry anybody. I am OK. I’m fine.”
