A suburban man has been charged with murder in what police called the “tragic” death of a missing 21-year-old woman, with prosecutors saying he led her into his garage and then gruesomely attacked and fatally stabbed her before dumping her body on the side of the road in rural Lake County.
Santino Ortiz, 22, of Elmhurst, made his first court appearance Monday in DuPage County, where he was charged six counts of First Degree Murder, one court of Armed Robbery and one count of Concealment of a Homicidal Death, a release said. He was denied pre-trial release and will be held until his court appearance next month, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin.
The incident unfolded early Saturday morning, authorities said, when Elmhurst police officers at 4:35 a.m. responded to a 911 call of a missing person, who was later identified as 21-year-old Claudia Mojarrieta-Matos.
According to Berlin’s office, the 911 caller said he dropped Mojarrieta-Matos off at 1 a.m. in the 600 block of W. Lorraine in Elmhurst to meet with a man later identified as Ortiz. 15 minutes after dropping her off, the caller said Morarrieta-Matos called him crying. He also said he heard a struggle on the other end of the phone, and and that the call ended abruptly.
The 911 caller said he returned the area where he dropped Mojarrieta-Matos off and tried to find her. He then filed a missing person report, authorities said.
Shortly after the report was filed, Elmhurst police identified Ortiz as a suspect in Mojarrieta-Matos’ disappearance. About 4:30 p.m., after speaking with authorities, Ortiz was taken into custody.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney alleged Ortiz solicited Mojarrieta-Matos for prostitution and arranged to meet her in the 600 block of W. Lorraine, about a block north of Ortiz’ home. After she arrived at the address, Ortiz led her into his garage and forced her to the ground, slamming her head on the floor.
Ortiz then took a knife out of his pocket and repeatedly stabbed Mojarrieta-Matos from behind, Berlin’s office said. He then wrapped her head in a garbage bag and put her body in a garbage can, and later into his pickup truck.
About 8 a.m., Ortiz was believed to have left his house and discarded Mojarrieta-Matos’ body in a rural area of Wadsworth in far northeast Illinois. Her body was located approximately 40 feet off the road among brush and trees.
An autopsy conducted by the Lake County Coroner’s Office found Mojarrieta-Matos had been stabbed approximately seven times in her face and head, Berlin’s office said.
“I offer my sincere condolences to Claudia’s family and friends as they attempt to process this horrific loss,” Berlin said in the release. “With a complete disregard for human life, Claudia’s young life was taken in a senseless, brutal act of violence, allegedly committed by Mr. Oritz. The type of violence alleged in this case will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Ortiz is next scheduled to appear in court Jan. 5.
