“We were driving on a dark two-lane highway,” Dillon explained in the video of the January 2025 accident. "And there was a truck and trailer that was stopped in the middle of the road. We did not see it because they didn’t have any lights on."
He continued, "My mom tried to swerve to go around it, but the passenger side of the car hit the side of the trailer and completely spun us around. When we stopped, we were facing the opposite direction on the opposite side of the road. At the time of impact, we were going 50 mph."
After the crash, Pauline's main injuries were broken ribs and a "pretty good gash" on her left leg. By June, she started experiencing digestive issues. Dillon said that "everything she ate or drank kept coming back up," but doctors "couldn't find anything wrong" when she went to the hospital.
In August, testing revealed a blockage in Pauline's esophagus; she was also diagnosed with COVID-19. She was hospitalized for months, during which doctors found a “pretty severe” wound on her back that "she didn’t tell anybody about, I guess because she was embarrassed.” Dillon said his mother repeatedly refused treatment for it.
“They couldn’t do all these tests and surgeries and procedures that they wanted to do because there was always something wrong,” Dillon detailed, sharing that Pauline became malnourished because she could not keep anything down.
In November, Pauline was sent home on hospice care.
A GoFundMe campaign was created to raise funds for cremation. As of writing, it has raised almost $200 of its $1,400 goal.
In 2011, Potter became the heaviest living woman at 643 pounds, per Guinness World Records.
