According to Puth, the aerospace company has been launching rockets in Santa Barbara, and a recent launch caused his entire house to shake.
"Hi @elonmusk …these sonic booms have gotten progressively louder since they started launching the rockets in Santa Barbara. This one at 3am today felt like 150-160 dB, violently shook our whole house, and really frightened my pregnant wife. I hope they do not get louder :/," he wrote on X.
Puth and his wife, Brooke Sansone, are currently expecting their first child after having made the news public in October. He shared the news with a special music video and single titled "Changes."
Neither Musk nor his SpaceX staff has responded to Puth's concerns.
Based on the information given by Puth, 150-160 dB is not something to take lightly. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, noises up to 140 dB are equivalent to hearing a firearm discharge and are tagged under, "Painful impulse noise—Not safe for any period of time."
Noises at or above 150 dB are equivalent to hearing fireworks three feet away or the same as hearing a firecracker or shotgun.
According to details of the launch, it took place at 3:40 a.m. PT, as the company’s Falcon 9 rocket launched 27 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Puth's concerns had fans commenting that it may be better to move away from the area, with some claiming further projects will likely be even louder. SpaceX did post a disclaimer saying residents in the area did hear "one or more sonic booms."
