Mikkey Dee opened up about the terrifying health battle that nearly cost him his life and almost cost him his leg.
The former Motörhead drummer, 62, recently appeared on the Metal Sticks podcast, where he described the sudden medical emergency he faced in December 2024 after what seemed like a simple sprained foot turned into a fight against sepsis.

According to Dee, things took a drastic turn once the infection set in and quickly overwhelmed his body.
“I got caught with sepsis, and I was in the hospital for five weeks, struggling, really,” he said during the November 23 episode. “From the beginning it was a struggle for my life, basically, I would say. I did not realize that at the time, of course, but the further down the road we went, I realized how serious this was.”
The drummer explained that doctors were forced to intervene aggressively to stop the infection’s spread.
“I had three operations on my right foot and calf. They had to cut open three times and stop the infection that my foot blew up, like an overcooked Christmas ham. It was unbelievable,” he shared.
Things got even more frightening when other organs began to fail.
“My liver and gallbladder was shutting down. I was yellow and I had a tremendous infection in my body. So I was fighting heavy for that.”
Dee added that he was transferred through three different hospitals in Sweden as multiple teams worked to save him.

“I had so many doctors involved, from orthopedics to internal into infection,” he said, noting that the medical staff played a crucial role in keeping him alive. “The nurses and doctors did an amazing job to keep me alive and not to even amputate my leg, because that was very close, to cut that bad boy off.”
Although he survived the ordeal, recovery has been slow and painful. Dee shared that while the infection has long cleared, the damage to his foot remains a daily challenge, especially when he performs.
“I’m still not recovered. I mean, inside I feel great. I’m bacteria-free since many, many months, but the foot in itself kind of hurts in the joints,” he explained. “When I use my foot so much, it hurts a lot. By the end of a set, I have to kind of limp off the stage a little bit because my foot hurts tremendously.”

Still, Dee, who now performs with the Scorpions, is determined to play through the pain for now.
“With that said, I’m playing a full set, and I feel that I’m reaching the level where I should be. I take the pain and I deal with it,” he said, adding that more treatment could come in the future. “Hopefully eventually this will go away and the swelling will go down a little bit more. And maybe we have to do some adjustments next year to my foot. I don’t know.”
