From 1989 to 1998, Julia Louis-Dreyfus played Elaine Benes, the only main female character in the sitcomSeinfeld. Elaine was witty, independent, and neurotic, but it was her '90s fashion that really stood out throughout the nine-season run of the NBC comedy.
Elaine was known for rocking floral midi dresses, jackets with shoulder pads, and chunky Oxfords with white socks. But 30 years later, Louis-Dreyfus wishes she could turn back time.
During a December 2025 appearance on Amy Poehler’sGood Hang podcast, Louis-Dreyfus, 64, admitted she still couldn’t shake Elaine’s ‘90s New York fashion. “God, I’d love to go back and fix that look,” she said to Poehler.
"Listen, if anybody in America is listening to this: Please don't do the '90s again,” she added. "I don't know what to say. I'm just so f---ing sorry. I really, really am."
View this post on InstagramLouis-Dreyfus noted that midway through Seinfeld’s run, another New York-set show, Friends, made its debut. But stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox andLisa Kudrow had a very different look than Elaine did.
"I actually remember because Friends came out at some point when we were doing Seinfeld,'" Louis-Dreyfus recalled. "And all those girls were so sexy! And I remember thinking like, 'Ah, f---, I should have been sexy! … This is such a missed opportunity.’ I’m, seriously, like a midriff. Anything. Anything!”
When Poehler speculated that Seinfeld wouldn’t have worked “if Elaine was paying attention to" her fashion choices, Louis-Dreyfus replied, “It might have worked.”
“Just coming in like in tight jeans and like how they all dressed,” she added. “Anyway, let’s not dwell on my regrets.”
The Seinfeld star acknowledged that she was pregnant twice during her time on the show and was wearing “huge like picnic tablecloths” during some seasons.
Louis-Dreyfus has expressed regret about Elaine’s wardrobe in the past. “I have nothing but regret for that look. At the time I was trying to be funky,” she once said during a discussion with Stephen Colbert, per Vanity Fair.
In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Louis-Dreyfus revealed that she gave input on how her character dressed. "I'm afraid I did have a lot of influence on Elaine's outfit,” she admitted. "I mean, we had a costume designer for sure, but I mean, for instance, that's the typical floral pattern with the socks and the shoes. I just thought that at the time, I thought, 'There is nothing groovier than this look.'"
She further explained, "[Elaine] definitely dictated her own style, and I think she was not somebody who dressed super sexy. That wasn't her vibe, man. She was kind of didn't need to do that. She was a little tougher."
