Investigators sought help from the public Wednesday in identifying three people who bombarded California Highway Patrol officers on a Los Angeles freeway during violent protests against federal illegal immigration raids earlier this year.
The three males are alleged to have thrown large rocks from an elevated position above southbound lanes of the Hollywood (101) Freeway on June 8, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“These assaults endangered the lives of numerous sworn CHP officers and resulted in thousands of dollars of damage to law enforcement vehicles,” according to an LASD statement that was accompanied by images of the culprits in action.
According to the sheriff’s department, the trip appeared to be part of a larger group riding pocket bikes who arrived in the area and started committing acts of violence and vandalism.
Images broadcast at the time showed CHP officers being bombarded from an overpass with fireworks that exploded into showers of sparks. At least one electric scooter was also thrown down at officers who tried to protect themselves.
“One of these three suspects appeared to be older and much heavier than the others, (and) was wearing a ‘Small Engine Cams’ company hooded sweatshirt and was riding a pocket bike with a noticeable extended rear exhaust pipe, while the other two suspects wore unique helmets,” according to the sheriff’s department.
The Metro Detail of the LASD’s Major Crimes Bureau is urging anyone with information that could help detectives identify and locate any or all of the suspects to contact them at 562-946-7893. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477, or at www.p3tips.com
Others, including juveniles, were earlier arrested in connection with rock-throwing and protest violence investigations.
