The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to give Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill a promotion in the central contracts for the upcoming annual year. The Punjab batter, who took over the reins of the Test team in May and the ODI team in October, is currently placed in Grade A in the contracts. The decision on Gill’s promotion will be taken at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will be held on December 22.
Gill to get promotion, Ro-ko’s future uncertain
As per news agency PTI, the revision of central contracts will be the main topic of discussion during the BCCI’s AGM on December 22. The report states that Gill could be placed in the top A+ category along with Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah. At present, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jadeja and Bumrah comprise of cricketers in the A+ grade in the BCCI central contracts and earn a salary of Rs 7 crore. With Gill set to be the all-format captain in the future, it won’t come as a surprise if he is elevated.
The report further states that a call will be taken on whether to retain Rohit and Virat in the Grade A+ category on the central contracts during the meeting. The veteran duo are active only in the ODI format and have retired from Tests and T20is. As per the rules, players who feature in all three formats are slotted in the top category. However, Ro-Ko were granted exemption even though they retired from T20is. However, with the duo playing just one format now, the board will decide if they need to be retained in A+ category or demoted.
“The 31st AGM of the apex council will be held online, where decisions are expected on the contracts of Kohli and Rohit, both of whom have retired from Tests and T20Is over the past year and now feature only in ODI cricket,” the report stated.
