Beloved 90s Rock Band Teases Major 40th Anniversary Announcement

It might be tough for longtime fans to wrap their heads around, but it's been almost 40 years since the Afghan Whigs first got together in Cincinnati. If that sounds like cause for celebration, apparently the band members think so, too — because not only did they just drop two singles (their first new music in three years), but they're also hinting at something big "in the works."

As Brooklyn Vegan reported, the Afghan Whigs — who are known for their distinctive covers — are releasing a new 7" with two cover songs: "Fake Like" by Poliça‘s “Fake Like” and “Downtown" by Still Corners.

“Both of these songs were born out of soundcheck jams. Each song holds a particular resonance for me and I really felt the lyrics, so they both flowed freely and felt good to sing," said frontman Greg Dulli.

While the 7″ won't be out until early 2026 (on the band's own label, Shake It Records), it's available for preorder now — and what's more, in honor of their upcoming milestone anniversary, "many plans are in the works for the band already and will be announced in the new year."

It's not yet clear if those plans will include more new music or a tour, but fans are most likely hoping for both.

Greg Dulli says playing cover songs started out a way for the Afghan Whigs to 'warm up'

In a 2022 interview with Billboard, Dulli reflected on whether making covers part of the Afghan Whigs' repertoire was always part of the agenda.

"I don’t think it was a plan, but it was a way to like, warm up," Dulli explained. "And kind of start a dialogue inside the band. The first songs we played as a band were cover songs. So it’s how you get to know if you can play with someone, and then find out the other strengths. But I love to interpret, you know what I mean? It’s fun. And I wouldn’t know what it was like to not do that. There’s plenty of room to do both, you don’t have to be either/or."

"One of the first songs that we ever played as a band was 'Psychedelic Shack' by the Temptations," he continued. "So you’ve got sort of that psychedelic soul that was happening in the early ‘70s, with a lotta wah-wah guitar, that got Rick [McCollum, former lead guitarist] on the wah-wah — and a song that I can think of that came out of that was 'Turn on the Water' from Congregation. I can hear that in there."

"I think that by trying different things, it would lead you to your own thing. And I believe someone said, 'Talent borrows and genius steals,'" Dulli added.

Fans of the Afghan Whigs would probably agree.
