The Worlds Most Expensive Guitar Just Got a New Home

You might expect someone who paid millions of dollars for a musical instrument to want to keep it, but in the case of the world's most expensive guitar, that apparently wasn't the case at all.

In 2020, Kurt Cobain's 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar broke the record for most expensive guitar ever sold at auction when Peter Freedman of Rode Microphones bought it for $6 million. At the time, Freedman said he planned to exhibit the guitar — which is the one Cobain used when Nirvana performed on MTV Unplugged in 1993 — in a touring exhibition, with proceeds going to the performing arts.

Now, according to Far Out, has donated the item to the Royal College of Music, where it will become part of a new touring exhibition, just as Freedman promised, which will hopefully begin in 2026.

“I am delighted to gift this iconic guitar to the Royal College of Music so that they might realize the guitar’s value and profile for the benefit of young musicians at the RCM and reach people around the world," Freedman said. "This gift is dedicated to my father Henry who loved music and London, and it’s an honor for me to support the next generation of musicians.”

In response, James Williams, director of the Royal College of Music, said The Royal College of Music "is deeply grateful to Peter Freedman for his incredible generosity in gifting the College Kurt Cobain’s Martin D-18E guitar."

“This asset opens future opportunities to share the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition with an international audience; it is also emblematic of Peter’s unstinting support for the performing arts and his steadfast belief in the power of education to transform lives," he added.

Kurt Cobain's $6 million guitar came with some priceless artifacts

According to Rolling Stone, Cobain's guitar came with its original hard-shell case, decorated with a flyer for the album Feel the Darkness by the band Poison Idea. The case also contained a half-used pack of Martin guitar strings, three picks, and a “suede ‘stash’ bag” decorated with a silver spoon, knife and fork.

“When I heard that this iconic guitar was up for auction, I immediately knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure it and use it as a vehicle to spotlight the struggles that those in the performing arts are facing and have always faced,” Freedman said at the time.

As it turns out, that's exactly what Freedman did.
