In 2005, Ryan Reynolds was still best known for the sitcomTwo Guys and a Girl, National Lampoon's Van Wilder, and the unsuccessful third Blade film, Blade: Trinity. While he was getting recognition for his deadpan, comedic timing, he was still a decade away from becoming Deadpool and several years from playing Sandra Bullock's love interest in The Proposal.
But that year, Reynolds starred in the romantic dark comedy Just Friends. Starring Amy Smart and Anna Faris, the film has amassed a cult following over the last two decades. Reynolds played Chris Brandis, a music executive who, as a teenager, was obese and also secretly in love with his best friend, Jamie Palamino (Smart). When she learned how he felt after a cruel prank, she told him she didn't feel the same, prompting him to declare that one day he would be more successful than everyone else.
Fast-forward: as an adult, he became slim, attractive, and overconfident. One of the musicians his label was trying to land was the moody and erratic Samantha (Faris), and after she set her private jet on fire, they were forced to land near his hometown. That brought him back into contact with Jamie, whom he again tried to woo, and, of course, everything went hilariously wrong.
View this post on InstagramLooking back on the film for its 20th anniversary, Smart recalled how difficult it was to keep from cracking up in her scenes with Reynolds. "He is just innately so funny that it was a big challenge to hold the laughter in," she told People.
"I think the scene where he's freaking out in the car and she has to return his gloves," she recalled of one of her favorite scenes. "It was one take, and I do break a little bit in it, but I tried my best to keep a straight face. He was just losing it! In the best way, so it was really hard."
In 2023, Reynolds and Smart reunited to make a tongue-in-cheek "sequel" to Just Friends. In the commercial, the Green Lantern star stands in a room decorated with a Christmas tree when Smart walks in holding an empty bottle of Aviation Gin. Smart shows her discomfort with the scene, and it's revealed that they're standing in an empty room before a green screen. As the commercial continues, Smart grows furious when she realizes it's not a sequel at all.
“So this is a stupid ad for your gin company?” she asked.
“Well, let’s not rush to judgment before all the facts are in," he responded. "I mean, this is a self-funded sequel predicated on a loose interpretation of IP law, so in effect—yes, it is an ad for my Aviation American Gin."
"Wow, dirty," she exclaimed, storming off. After Reynolds called out, “Well, never work with your heroes. You hear the bottle shatter as she screamed back, "You're not my f-----g hero!"
