With two open practice squad spots, it felt like it was only a matter of time before the Chicago Bears would fill (at least) one vacancy. And according to the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs, they are set to do so with the addition of linebacker Ty Summers.
Here is the reporting from Biggs, who provides a little bit of background on the coming transaction:
#Bears signed LB Ty Summers to the practice squad. This is the sixth team the former TCU product has been with. Originally a 7th round pick of the #Packers in 2019, Summers has appeard in 88 career games, primarily as a core special teams performer.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) December 10, 2025The addition of Ty Summers to the practice squad comes just daysa fter the team lost linebacker Carl Jones Jr. to the Baltimore Ravens in a waiver claim. Jones was a valued special teams contributor who collected the third-most tackles on the team in that phase. So to read that Biggs note about Summers’ contributions as a core special teams player makes the addition of this particular player make sense for this Bears squad.
Also, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson was not pleased with how the team’s special teams unit played against the Green Bay Packers in Week 14. Frankly, I would not blame him at all if he was not happy with how the group has performed over the full course of the 2025 season. There aren’t too many ways to shake up a roster in a meaningful way at this stage of the year, but mixing it up in the special teams is one way to do it.
Who is Ty Summers and why did the Bears sign him to their practice squad?
Ty Summers is a 29-year-old linebacker who played his collegiate ball at TCU, where he earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2016. A seventh-round pick (226th overall) by the Green Bay Packers in 2019, Summers has appeared in 88 games as a pro. Summers has played for the Packers (2019-2021), Jaguars (2022), Saints (2022-23), Giants (2024), and Lions (2025). Given that he spent time with the Saints, I would like to think he comes with a recommendation from Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen (who was New Orleans’ head coach at the time).

Even though Ty Summers has three starts under his belt, the linebacker has spent far more time on special teams. His breakdown of game snaps shakes out to 1,654 special teams snaps and just 317 plays on defense. With the Bears getting T.J. Edwards and Noah Sewell back in the mix, there is not a huge need for linebacker help in the starting lineup. But with that being said, I am open to players who could chip in every now and again or in case their number is called upon in a pinch. Even still … Summers is a special teams add for a team that just lost one of its ace players in that facet of the game.

For what it’s worth, the Bears still have a practice squad spot that remains open. The team hosted tryouts for seven players on Tuesday. Among those players were two wide receivers, a pair of defensive linemen, a couple of safeties, and a quarterback. I’m not sure how Chicago’s front office will plug that remaining hole on the practice squad. But I am always curious to see what is done here.
