Philip Rivers Breaks Silence on His NFL Comeback at 44 — and Says He’s Taking It One Day at a Time

Philip Rivers is opening up about returning to the NFL at the age of 44 — and nearly five years after his retirement.

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Indianapolis Colts shocked fans when the team, facing multiple quarterback injuries, signed Rivers to their practice squad. Rivers was a member of the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers for 16 seasons before joining the Colts in 2020 shortly before his retirement in 2021.

The next day, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, Rivers spoke to reporters about his unexpected return to the league, saying that his family is "scared" and "nervous" for him but ultimately "excited" by the opportunity.

"My wife has been my biggest fan the whole time I played, and she's nervous about the physical aspect of it, as you expect any wife to," he said. "I mean, for 250 games or whatever it was, that was a risk, as you see every week."

Rivers also joked that if an injury were to occur, he would have "a long time to recover."

"Whether you're 24 in the best shape, or you're 44 and not so sure. Anything can happen," he continued. "Dudes are big and fast, just like they were, so I'm just taking it one day at a time. I do feel good, there's something about being back in this building that feels right, and I'm just really thankful."

The quarterback noted his ten children are excited to cheer him on if he does end up playing in a game. However, as of Dec. 10, the Colts said they plan to start rookie Riley Leonard, despite the fact he's currently dealing with a knee injury.

Rivers and his wife Tiffany share 10 children: Halle, 23, Caroline, 20, Grace, 19, Gunner, 17, Sarah, 15, Peter, 14, Rebecca, 12, Clare, 10, Anna, 6, and Andrew, 2. Halle made Rivers a grandfather after she welcomed a baby boy in late 2024.

Rivers also said some of his younger children don't remember him playing before he retired in 2021.

"My six-year-old asked, 'Dad, why don't you play anymore?'" he said.

On the other hand, his sons are "fired up" about potentially seeing their dad make his NFL comeback.

Rivers admitted it's “human nature” to question his abilities after five years away from the game, but said his confidence is growing each day and he's leaning into his “one day at a time” mentality.

The Indianapolis Colts play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 4:25 p.m. ET.
