THERE’S a major move, as the Baltimore Orioles have finally entered the big-money free agent world again, for the first time in a decade.
Pete Alonso is headed to Baltimore:
BREAKING: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 10, 2025Had to beat Kyle Schwarber’s deal ever so slightly, apparently. Wild that he’s really leaving the Mets. We’ll see the contract particulars, but that’s a LOT of money for a guy who might be finished playing first base soon, and who may not be quite the bat that Schwarber is.
Instant reactions where I’m not wholly thrilled, even though this doesn’t HAVE to wind up impacting the Cubs. It’s just that it could:
First, this makes the Orioles all the more likely to trade position players/prospects for a starting pitcher, so their ability to pull something off that boxes out the Cubs just went up.
Second, although he wasn’t necessarily likely for the Red Sox, Alonso was on their radar. So the possibility that they push a little harder to retain Alex Bregman just went up.
Third, the Mets lose another player, still have tons of money, and are assuredly going to pounce on something. Probably Michael King.
A final thought for now: Remember when the Orioles signed Chris Davis to a monster contract and it almost immediately became one of the worst in baseball? I am mentioning this right now for no reason.
